No address? No problem

I have been wanting to say this for a long time:

Food shopping
In London
Is a
Nightmare.

Especially for someone trying to be green, and living on a boat as a Continuous Cruiser (moving every 14 days: i.e. always finding new shops/markets!), and… if you never know what to cook! Oh, and of course, if you are ‘poor’, and busy, and impatient, and indecisive, and not very organised… For someone like me, basically.

Screen Shot 2016-02-10 at 11.00.23I walk into grocery shops and everything is wrapped in plastic. Broccoli, potatoes, carrots! So I go to markets, but some are sooooo expensive. So then I try organic shops, but some are ‘fakes’ and the others even more expensive. I end up buying random things here and there, spending a lot of time for it, trying to find unpackaged food for a decent price, not always succeeding. It certainly stimulates my creativity, as I sometimes buy stuff that I have no idea how to cook… but it is always so frustrating. It makes me hate going food shopping. Because I’ll be honest, if I’ve had a bad day and I am tired and hungry, and the only shop I find on the way home is Tesco, I’ll buy broccoli in plastic… And this makes me feel horrible every time!
I need a change.

Until yesterday, I missed having an address, where I could get an organic veggie box delivered to my doorstep, without worrying too much, with a selection of seasonal fruit and vegetables, and maybe eggs, and milk in glass bottles… But how to do it on a narrowboat? I thought there wasn’t an option!

But then, the revelation came from one of my friends (thanks Maria!): you can pick up these boxes from collection points around London! How stupid of me not to think this could be possible, and for not researching about it before! Apparently I am the last Londoner not to know about this. Well, better late than never.

And better still, one of the collection points is the Castle Climbing Centre, where I go climbing every week.

I already set up a standing order, and I am going to pick up my first box next week!
Pick up is amazing for Narrowboaters! And it is also great to reduce emissions, when you think about it.

I already feel better, and I can’t wait to pick up my organic box next week!

Here are the 10 best Veggie Boxes according to ‘The Independent’. Some offer pick up options, some don’t… I chose the Growing Communities one, as their pick up point is perfect for me!
